New hoist helps elderly and infirm to use Gourock Pool

AN Inverclyde charity has splashed the cash to help disabled and elderly swimmers at the iconic Gourock Outdoor Pool.

The Peter Stanton Trust granted a contribution of £3,000 to Inverclyde Leisure towards the cost of a fixed pool hoist which can lower people with limited mobility or disabilities into the water.

Provost and charity trustee Robert Moran said: “We were delighted to make this award to allow Gourock Pool to offer unrestricted access with the new pool hoist.

“People simply sit in the portable chair which is attached to the hoist arm and can be lowered and lifted into and out of the water.

“Swimming is a fantastic, low-impact way to exercise and keep fit and the new hoist has given people with mobility problems a whole new lease of life.” The Peter Stanton Memorial Trust was set up in 1993 to relieve the needs of disabled people and to encourage them to take part in recreational or other leisure activities.

Peter Stanton represented his country at the paraplegic Olympic and Commonwealth Games and was also a coach with the Port Glasgow Otters Swimming Club.

Provost Moran added: “The trust is not restricted to sporting activities.

“Money can also be made available to help disabled people take part in other non-sporting activities which are considered to be leisure or recreational.

“It is all about improving their quality of life, so I would urge anyone who thinks they may be eligible to get in touch.” Application forms can be obtained by contacting Peter Stanton Memorial Trust, c/o Legal and Democratic Services, Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Greenock PA15 1LY, by telephone on 01475 712139 or email psmt@inverclyde.gov.uk
